A little Q&A session:

Here are a few of the questions I get asked with some of the answers I give!

If there is a burning question you have and it isn’t covered here, please do drop me an email via the Contact page and we can have a chat!

Q: What is The Calm Birth School?

A:   I am proud to be associated with The Calm Birth School and offer wonderful birth preparation programmes in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas.

The Calm Birth School was founded by Suzy Ashworth and since launching has helped thousands of women across the world have calm and positive birth experiences

Suzy herself says ‘I have but one simple intention, which is to equip you with all the tools you need to create a calm, positive and empowered birthing experience, whatever way your baby chooses to enter into the world’.

You can find out more about The Calm Birth School by visiting the website at www.thecalmbirthschool.com

Q: Is hypnosis a bunch of hippy BS?

A: This one does tend to come from Dads and it does make me chuckle when I’m asked it! However a healthy level of curiosity is always encouraged and it is so interesting seeing Dads have that ‘lightbulb moment’ when it all clicks and makes sense to them!

It really isn’t a bunch of ‘hippy BS’ but there is a lot more detail about hypnosis and how it is used in my birth preparation sessions here and I am happy to answer any questions you may have prior to beginning any of the courses.

Whether you are having a hospital birth, home birth, birth in a field…wherever and whatever your birth preferences are…the Birthing programme can help you feel fully prepared for the birth of your baby or babies. It’s all about empowering you to have the birth that is right for you and ensuring you remain in calm, relaxed and in control. Pretty fab hey!

Q: Is it good for me and my baby?

A: It’s great for you and baby!

It tends to be that babies born using these techniques are calmer, sleep better and feed better because they enter the world at a pace that they set and in a more gentle manner.

For you…well being equipped with the tools and techniques to have a calm and positive birth experience is just awesome!

I am happy to discuss any questions you may have in more depth and if you would like to organise a phone consultation, please feel free to contact me

Q: Can my husband/partner/birth partner get involved?

A: Absolutely! It is encouraged!

He/She will be able to practice with you and will play an integral role in helping you reach deep relaxation and will be equipped with the tools to help you have the right birth for you!

The birth partner is the protector of the birth space and can act as your advocate on the day, ensuring that you can go into your birthing body and focus on your birth.

It can often be that Birth Partners feel a little left out or completely powerless at the birth but the classes offered can help change that and leave them feeling much more confident and a very important part of the birth.

Q: What can I say to my husband? He is sceptical

A: It’s easy to forgive husbands for thinking that the programmes are all hippy dippy and will be taught in a field surrounded by chanting fairies…I think the best thing you can do is to let him read the blog post from my husband Andy who had that scepticism in spades, but supported me…and had his own lightbulb moment when it clicked into place and he got it! He felt important, he felt that he had a real part to play in the birth, but he can tell you much better himself…find out more here

Q: Will it work?

A: It’s the same when you learn anything new – you get out if it what you are prepared to put into it!

The more committed you are to learning, practising the techniques and listening to the MP3s and the more you practice the tools and techniques, the more natural they will feel on the day.

We are continually asking our clients for feedback on how the programme has helped them in their births. In The Wise Hippo published statistics we were told by 144 clients that retuned their birth outcome forms that:

  • 100% said they felt prepared and confident about their birth after they had completed their classes;
  • 100% said they were able to successfully use what they had learnt on the course during their labour and birth;
  • 100% said they were able to make calm, informed choices;
  • 100% said they know that their baby had the right birth on the day.

A whopping 72% of respondents achieved the birth that they were hoping for. What makes us unique is that our clients do not feel like they have failed, or worse traumatised, if they don’t achieve that. We know there is no such thing as the ‘right’ way to birth, just the right birth on the day. We set realistic expectations for birth that leave our clients feeling successful.

Q: What courses do you offer?

A:  All courses can be found here on my website with course information, the different course formats and prices.

Equally, I am always happy to answer any questions, so if you like to chat then please do contact me

Q: Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

A: There is a lot more detail about hypnosis and how it is used in The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme here and I am happy to answer any questions you may have prior to beginning any of the courses. However, the short answer is no. You are aware still of what is going on around you and you can still hear everything that is being said. You will not be unconscious at any point, simply in a relaxed, dream-like state and you may find you fall asleep, but that is fine and you can reawaken when you feel ready!

Everything we teach on The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme is based on physiological and medical fact and is how the mind is already working. In fact there isn’t anything new to learn – we are just taking what the mind is doing and looking at it from a different perspective, making sure that you are utilising your mind in the best way possible to support a more comfortable and positive birth experience – Hypnosis for Childbirth (Hypnobirthing).

Q: What are these MP3s you talk about?

A:  The MP3s that are available when you log into your client area support the wonderful work we do in the sessions.

For more detailed information on the hypnosis sessions carried out in class and the available mp3s click here

Q: Can you guarantee me a pain free birth?

A:  The aim of hypnosis for childbirth (hypnobirthing) is not a completely pain-free and ideal natural birth.

“We believe that a positive birth experience is a state of mind, it’s not defined by what happens during labour and birth but by how a woman feels about her baby’s birth”

It’s about remaining calm, relaxed and in control, whatever path your birth takes.

Pain itself (not that I’m loving that word!) can mean different things to different people. We have no way of knowing how you experience pain, hence cannot guarantee a pain free birth! For example…what may feel a little uncomfortable to one person may feel like absolute agony to another!

Although I can say that I know a pain free birth is possible, the focus is not you achieving a pain free birth because this is setting an expectation and it’s so important that you feel you don’t have to meet any expectations. The focus is on you having a positive birth experience, one that leaves you feeling empowered and for your baby to have the right birth on the day, no matter what path your birthing takes.

There is a fantastic blog about hypnosis for birth (hypnobirthing) and making an informed choice here

Q: Will my midwife support me in using the Wise Hippo techniques?

A:  We know that women who learn hypnosis for childbirth are more likely to have a ‘positive birth’ experience.
With our approach to hypnosis for childbirth, we also know that women are less likely to be disappointed should they need to deviate from their desired birth and this is a view that more and more midwives are sharing.

Have a click on this YouTube link and see what these midwives have to say about The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme and the differences they are seeing in the births they attend of women that have used the techniques.

Q: My baby is due really soon, is it too late for me to do a course?

A: It really is never too late to prepare for the birth of your baby! Whilst I do recommend the full 4 week course, even learning a few of the techniques taught can have such a positive effect on your birth!

There could even be still plenty of time for you to attend the classes and practice the fab tools and techniques. Some couples actually prefer to start the course a bit later on in their pregnancy and closer to their ‘due date’ because they find that they feel more motivated and can really focus on the birth.

If you have been doing a bit of searching further along in your pregnancy and have only just found out about hypnosis for childbirth (hypnobirthing). Then, please do still get in touch! We can go through the ‘essentials’ and ensure the main things you want to know are covered. You can totally benefit from even learning a few tools and techniques, even if you are 40 weeks pregnant!

You may also benefit from a Relax, breathe and birth session, which is a fabulous way to get the Wise Hippo essentials in a 3 hour taster workshop!

Whatever your requirements, a quick chat can put your mind at rest and ensure that we are working together to achieve the Right Birth for you and baby! To get in contact, click here

If you would like to get in touch, we can chat about the options available and take it from there.

Q: What happens if my birth isn’t going the way I wanted?

A: What makes us unique is that our clients do not feel like they have failed, or worse are traumatised, if they don’t achieve the birth they originally wanted. We know there is no such thing as the ‘right’ way to birth, just the right birth on the day. We set realistic expectations for birth that leave our clients feeling successful. The main aim of the birth preparation classes is to give you the tools and information to remain in control of your birth experience, no matter which way it goes.

Q: I often fall asleep listening to my MP3s…is this ok?

A:  Falling asleep listening to your MP3s is absolutely fine! In fact, it’s great that they are relaxing you enough to fall asleep!

Your subconscious will still be aware of what is going on around you and taking it all in. The more you listen to your MP3s and to your positive affirmations the more deep-rooted the suggestions within them are and that remains the case whether you hear them or you don’t.

For a free sample MP3, you can click here and see how you get on!

Q: When should I start my course?

A: The earliest I would recommend that you start The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme is after your 20 week scan to give you plenty of time to practice the tools and techniques before the birth.

But please don’t let that put you off if you are further along in your pregnancy, there is still plenty of time for you to attend the classes and practice the fab tools and techniques. Some couples actually prefer to start the course a bit later on in their pregnancy and closer to their ‘due date’ because they find that they feel more motivated and can really focus on the birth.

If you would like to find out more or would like to book your place on the next course, please contact me with your queries or to request a booking form.

Q: Will I need to keep practicing at home?

A: It’s the same when you learn anything new – you get out if it what you are prepared to put into it!

The more committed you are to learning, practising the techniques and listening to the MP3s and the more you practice the tools and techniques, the more natural they will feel on the day and the more effective the suggestions will be.

Q: Why can’t I just buy a CD and a book and listen to that?

A: There are some awesome books and CDs out there, but they’re always going to be a one-size-fits-all approach to giving birth to your baby. One of the main benefits my clients often talk about is how they’re treated as an individual and together we put together a birth plan that is truly personalised. We’re all different and so should our birth preparation. Oh and if you love books, you get one for free when you do my course so win win.

Q: What areas do you cover?
